About the role

Original posting from Earth Force via Ashby

Wildfires are a $20 trillion crisis. Earth Force is building the technology that dramatically increases the pace and scale of fuels reduction and forest thinning—creating resilient forests and protecting people and communities from the devastating effects of wildfire.

We develop integrated computer vision systems—hardware through UI—deployed on forestry machines operating in remote forest environments. Our platform measures trees in real time, automates production reporting, and enables precision silviculture at a scale the industry has never seen. We work primarily with the U.S. Forest Service and their implementation partners under multi-year program agreements.

We’re commercially deployed and approaching scale. Our next season of growth will deliver on the capabilities our tech has developed, broadening the trust we've built with our partners to serve those working to protect land from catastrophic wildfire.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Earth Force is seeking a Senior Field Technician to support the deployment, maintenance, and operation of our technology on forestry equipment across the northern Sierra Nevada region. Based in or near the Reno–Tahoe area, this role will be responsible for installing, servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing integrated hardware and software systems on heavy machinery operating in remote forest environments.

Reporting to the Director of Operations, this is a hands-on, individual contributor role requiring strong electrical and mechanical skills, sound safety judgment, and the ability to independently manage field assignments from preparation through completion. The ideal candidate is a resourceful, experienced field technician who is comfortable working around heavy equipment, navigating remote terrain, solving technical problems, and collaborating with equipment operators, customers, and internal teams.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2–5+ years of relevant hands-on experience in field service, equipment maintenance, installation, repair, or a similar technical role, or demonstrated equivalent capability.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently plan and execute equipment installations, maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and recovery in challenging field environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of 12V/24V electrical systems, including power and ground connections, circuit protection, wiring, and electrical diagnostics.
  • Hands-on mechanical and fabrication skills, including mounting equipment, drilling, modifying brackets, routing and protecting wiring, and adapting installations to different machinery.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose electrical, mechanical, hardware, software, and connectivity issues and determine when escalation is necessary.
  • Experience managing tools, spare parts, test equipment, and materials to ensure field assignments are completed safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to safely navigate remote worksites, operate 4WD vehicles on forest and unimproved roads, and access equipment on foot while carrying tools or materials when necessary.
  • Strong safety awareness and sound judgment when working around heavy machinery, active jobsites, and changing environmental conditions.
  • Clear communication and documentation skills, including the ability to coordinate with operators, contractors, customers, and internal technical teams.
  • Valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and willingness to travel regularly throughout the region, including to remote project sites.
  • Willingness to work weekends when necessary.

PREFERRED

  • Experience working with forestry, logging, construction, agricultural, mining, or other heavy equipment.
  • Background in field applications, field service engineering, mobile equipment installation, or heavy equipment maintenance.
  • Familiarity with Linux, networking, embedded computing systems, command-line tools, or technical data retrieval.
  • Exposure to computer vision, LiDAR, cameras, GPS, sensors, mapping, or other field-deployed technology.
  • Experience training equipment operators or customers on technical systems and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Experience developing technical documentation, installation procedures, maintenance checklists, or troubleshooting guides.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on problem-solving, working independently in the field, and applying practical technical skills to emerging technology. You'll play a critical role in keeping Earth Force systems operational, supporting our growing regional deployments, and helping scale technology that protects forests and communities from catastrophic wildfire.
