Who this role is best for

Best suited to engineers with strong mathematical backgrounds and functional programming experience working in enterprise automation and distributed systems.

Best fit for

  • Engineers with strong mathematical backgrounds and a deep understanding of functional programming paradigms
    — “strong background in mathematics is a key foundation for this kind of work”
  • Candidates who have built and maintained productive systems in startup environments
    — “startup experience (early employee, built productive systems yourself & know what it takes to maintain them)”
  • Individuals who prioritize correctness and system reliability in their work
    — “We value engineers who think deeply about systems, care about correctness, and take pride in building infrastructure that is understandable, maintainable, and reliable.”

Things to consider

  • The role requires a high level of precision and structured reasoning, not just general coding skills
    — “make assumptions explicit and use formal, structured reasoning to reach a solution”
  • Geographic flexibility is limited to Europe for remote work, despite global expansion
    — “Flexibility. Work on-site in Zurich or remotely within Europe.”

How to stand out

  • Highlight projects where you applied formal methods or type systems for correctness
    — “Modelling logic and correctness by construction is paramount to us”
  • Emphasize your ability to build and maintain complex, scalable systems
    — “built productive systems yourself & know what it takes to maintain them”
  • Showcase your experience with functional programming and its tradeoffs
    — “FP experience (have deep understanding of programming languages and are able to discern the various tradeoffs of different paradigms)”

About the role

Original posting from Blp Digital via Ashby

Join BLP and help make the world’s business processes autonomous!

Our agentic platform helps finance and operations teams worldwide remove manual work from their core business processes, so work runs end-to-end with greater control and significant productivity gains.

Today, over 550 enterprise customers use BLP across 1,300+ deployed projects. In the processes we automate, customers achieve productivity improvements of 5 to 10 times.

To date, BLP remains majority employee-owned, with Goldman Sachs holding a minority stake as a growth investor. Our success is driven by deep expertise in technology and business processes, a superior product with strong product-market fit, reflected in an expanding customer base that includes Fortune 500 companies.

BLP is one of Switzerland's fastest-growing SaaS scale-ups; we are now entering our next phase of growth. From our headquarters on Zürich's Bahnhofstrasse, we're expanding globally, with a growing presence across Europe and North America.

Join us and help make autonomous operations the new standard.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Delta builds BLP’s core software: the technical foundation that everything else at the company runs on.

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Modelling logic and correctness by construction is paramount to us. We aim to express what must be true, prevent invalid states, and keep systems pristine even as they grow.

Thus, we’re looking for highly ambitious engineers who can tackle difficult problems and think precisely. You must be able to make assumptions explicit and use formal, structured reasoning to reach a solution, and explain why it is correct. Typically, strong background in mathematics is a key foundation for this kind of work. We also place a high value on thoroughness and perfectionism.

Tooling wise, we rely heavily on type systems & functional programming.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Our work spans four areas, you will usually work on a given project within one of:

  • Infrastructure: Build and operate the cloud infrastructure BLP depends on, covering security, observability and CI/CD.
  • Backend: Develop a large codebase, tackling performance, concurrency and the challenges of distributed systems.
  • ML: Apply the latest AI technology to complex, real-world business problems and turn it into reliable production software.
  • Unbound: Build our product extension platform, enabling BLP to automate arbitrary customer business processes as we scale.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

We do not require experience with any particular technology or even industry software development experience.

You should, however, provide clear evidence of the abilities we’re looking for. That evidence could include:

  • strong academic backgrounds (math PhD/MSc or significant olympiad achievements)
  • startup experience (early employee, built productive systems yourself & know what it takes to maintain them)
  • FP experience (have deep understanding of programming languages and are able to discern the various tradeoffs of different paradigms)

WHAT WE VALUE

We value engineers who think deeply about systems, care about correctness, and take pride in building infrastructure that is understandable, maintainable, and reliable.

Flexibility. Work on-site in Zurich or remotely within Europe.
