About the role

Original posting from GHX via Greenhouse

GHX is seeking a Software Engineer with strong technical skills and growing experience in designing, developing, and delivering quality software solutions. You will join the Rules and Actions team and report to the Manager of Engineering. The team owns the rules engine at the core of the GHX Exchange platform. That engine evaluates routing and business rules against document events and runs the resulting actions, such as routing, notifications, and document processing, for healthcare supply chain transactions.

The ideal candidate is proficient in Java and the J2EE/Spring stack, has exposure to AWS cloud services and event-driven systems, and is developing skills in CI/CD pipelines and software design patterns.

 What You'll Work On

  • Build and enhance features in the rules execution service. It consumes EventBus document events, runs the rule engine, and publishes outcomes such as route-found and no-route-found.
  • Implement rule types, specifications, and actions on the shared rules framework and Exchange extension libraries, following established patterns.
  • Support EventBus-driven rules, including MongoDB-backed rule definitions, event matching, and rule caching.
  • Contribute to Intelligent Business Rules (IBR) capabilities such as business-rule statistics and change-request persistence.
  • Develop and maintain rule actions for document handling and integrations, with guidance from senior engineers. Ship changes behind feature flags.
  • Write JUnit 5 and Mockito tests, and help with ongoing monolith decoupling and Java version migrations.

 Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and implement scalable, secure, and maintainable software that aligns with business needs and is flexible, reusable, and efficient.
  • Translate ideas into clear, high-quality code under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Contribute to technical design for features and stories. Document your work and follow IT control policies.
  • Work with your team and cross-functional partners to address technical dependencies, review ideas and concerns, and deliver high-quality products.
  • Identify issues of limited scope, analyze their impact, and resolve them independently or with guidance from senior team members.
  • Follow best practices for design, development, testing, and Agile workflows.
  • Build professional relationships within the team to support collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • Develop an understanding of the rules subsystems, their components, and how they interact (EventBus, MongoDB, ConfigSvc, Elasticsearch) to support feature development.

 Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2–3 years of software development experience
  • BS in Computer Science, or similar work experience
  • 2+ years developing solutions with Java and J2EE technologies (Spring, Maven)
  • Working knowledge of cloud technologies. AWS experience with EC2, SNS, SQS, S3, or Lambda is nice to have.
  • Experience with databases. MongoDB, Elasticsearch, and MySQL are nice to have.
  • Exposure to a rules engine and/or event-driven architecture (event buses, publish/subscribe messaging)
  • Familiarity with AI tools and willingness to learn emerging technologies
  • Understanding of design best practices, including performance and scalability
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment
  • Able to work independently on well-defined tasks and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Experience delivering moderate-complexity features
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to Liquibase or other database migration tools
  • Experience with feature flags or configuration services
  • Interest in healthcare, supply chain, or EDI/B2B document exchange

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Delivers high-quality results on assigned tasks with attention to detail and commitment to excellence
  • Communicates technical concepts clearly to team members and immediate stakeholders
  • Collaborates effectively within the team and with other departments
  • Is developing an understanding of how individual work affects the broader system and team goals
  • Implements solutions that follow established patterns and contributes ideas for improvement
  • Is responsive to internal team needs and shows customer awareness
  • Adapts to changing conditions with flexibility and a positive attitude
  • Contributes to team success through reliable execution and willingness to learn
  • Applies Agile/LEAN principles to daily work and seeks to improve personal efficiency
  • Has a strong hunger to learn, grow, and continually hone their craft
