About the role

Original posting from CSC Generation via Lever

Adventure is our Culture. Join a team that celebrates a lifestyle as bold as the terrain we love. At Backcountry, we are rooted in adventure, recognition, and wellbeing on and off the mountain. We spotlight employee stories, celebrate milestones, and offer exclusive outdoor perks. Whether you are at HQ, in a retail store, or remote, you will be part of a team that thrives on energy, exploration, and connection.

Reports to: Senior Accountant (Richie Stevens, VP of Accounting, in the interim)

Location: Cottonwood Heights, Utah (Hybrid - In-office Tuesdays and Wednesdays)

About the Role:

Backcountry's accounting team has gone through significant turnover and is rebuilding. This role owns core month-end close work — journal entries, accruals, bank and payment channel reconciliations, and the revenue and cash cycle across our multi-channel platforms.

As Staff Accountant, you will execute close tasks accurately and on time, build well-documented reconciliations, develop a working command of NetSuite and the consolidation process, and find at least one manual task to streamline with AI or automation within your first year.

This is a lean team. You will own a lot, move fast, and make decisions with full end-to-end responsibility.

What You'll Do:

  • Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and adjustments as part of the monthly close checklist
  • Reconcile bank accounts, commercial card statements, and multi-channel customer payment platforms
  • Own the revenue and cash cycle across payment channels, ensuring transactions are recorded accurately
  • Pull and analyze NetSuite data for reporting and variance analysis
  • Gather supporting documentation from business owners, Accounts Payable, and cross-functional teams
  • Support acquisition integration, internal controls, and other team projects as they arise
  • Identify and streamline manual processes using AI tools or automation
  • Maintain clean, well-documented workpapers and reconciliations that can be reviewed and audited

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • 0 to 3 years of public or corporate accounting experience (internships count)
  • Solid US GAAP fundamentals, including accruals and account reconciliations
  • Strong Excel skills and comfort working with large data sets
  • Strong written, verbal, and analytical skills
  • Accuracy under tight deadlines with the ability to juggle multiple priorities during month-end close
  • Willingness to learn and curiosity about incorporating AI into accounting workflows
  • Able to work in-office in Cottonwood Heights, Utah on Tuesdays and Wednesdays

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Oracle NetSuite or another ERP system
  • Public accounting background (audit or tax)
  • Multi-entity or consolidated accounting experience
  • Exposure to Looker or other BI tools
  • Retail or e-commerce industry experience

Why Join:

The people who do best here are builders. They take ownership, move fast, and want to see the direct impact of their work.

  • Team Impact: Join a rebuilding accounting team where your contributions are visible and valued from day one. You will work closely with your manager and senior team members to keep the close running smoothly.
  • Growth and Development: Clear path from Staff Accountant to Senior Accountant-level scope within 18 to 24 months, with expanding ownership of close areas, acquisition integration, internal controls, and enterprise systems.
  • Real Ownership: You are trusted from day one to own close tasks end-to-end, build documentation, and find ways to improve how the team works.
  • Competitive Benefits: Paid time off policies, 401(k) match, medical/dental/vision and a variety of supplemental policies, and employee discounts across our portfolio of brands.

Interview Process:

  • Recruiter Screen - A 30-minute phone conversation with our recruiting team to discuss your background, interest in the role, Excel comfort, AI curiosity, availability, and logistics.
  • Hiring Manager Interview - A 45-minute video conversation with the VP of Accounting focused on your attention to detail, initiative, accounting fundamentals, and how you approach problem-solving.
  • Take-Home Case Study - A role-appropriate case study focused on problem-solving and critical thinking, sent after the Hiring Manager Interview and presented during the Panel Interview.
  • In-Person Panel Interview - A 90-minute in-person session at our Cottonwood Heights office where you will present your case study and meet members of the accounting and FP&A teams. Details and logistics will be arranged with your recruiter.
  • Reference Checks - Conducted in parallel with the final stages where possible.
  • Offer - We move quickly for the right candidate.

Interview process is subject to change. Any updates will be communicated promptly and clearly.

Please Note:

  • Part of our interview process is a mandatory in-person interview with someone on our team prior to an offer.  Candidates that are unwilling or unable to meet for an in-person interview will be removed from consideration immediately.
