Who this role is best for

Strong fit for systems engineers with deep OS-level expertise who thrive on building cloud-native infrastructure for scientific workflows.

Best fit for

  • Candidates with extensive low-level systems engineering experience in cloud-native environments
    — “take technical ownership of the low-level systems that power how scientific workloads run in the cloud”
  • Individuals who have led or contributed to distributed systems with multi-cloud resilience
    — “built distributed and/or cloud-native systems and understand the failure modes of running across multiple clouds”
  • Engineers with a track record of mentoring and onboarding new team members
    — “Mentor teammates and help onboard new engineers”

Things to consider

  • The role requires strong familiarity with Linux internals and OS-level debugging
    — “Solid Linux internals — filesystems, namespaces, processes, signals, networking”
  • Candidates must be open to using AI in their daily engineering work
    — “We use AI every day and expect engineers to use it extensively”

How to stand out

  • Highlight experience with FUSE, CRIU, and low-level cloud orchestration in your resume and interviews
    — “FUSE filesystems, Linux namespaces, CRIU checkpoint/restore, process supervision”
  • Emphasize your ability to drive technical direction and raise engineering standards
    — “Set technical direction and raise the standard for testing, observability, and operational excellence”
  • Showcase your background in performance optimization and systems-level I/O management
    — “Drive performance engineering — chunked I/O, multi-level caching, buffer pools”

About the role

About Seqera

Seqera is on a mission to empower scientists and organizations to solve humanity’s biggest challenges through data-driven science. As the company behind Nextflow and the Seqera Platform, we enable global enterprises, biotech innovators, academic institutions, and public sector organizations to scale complex data workflows with confidence.

We’re a global, remote-friendly team with headquarters in Barcelona and colleagues across the US, UK, and beyond. As we continue to grow, we’re strengthening our internal foundations - and that’s where you come in.

About the role

We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our Unified Compute team and take technical ownership of the low-level systems that power how scientific workloads run in the cloud. Our scheduling project (Sched) has gained real momentum, and we need a senior engineer to help build the ecosystem around it to the next level. The core of this role is deep in the stack — Fusion https://docs.seqera.io/platform-cloud/supported_software/fusion/overview (a FUSE filesystem presenting cloud object storage as POSIX), Fusion Snapshots https://docs.seqera.io/fusion/guide/snapshots/ (CRIU-based checkpoint/restore that survives spot-instance reclamation), and Ignite (a container process manager) — with Sched https://docs.seqera.io/platform-cloud/compute-envs/intelligent-compute as the orchestration layer that ties compute together. You'll also support adjacent services such as Groundswell (ML-based resource prediction) and Cloudinfo (multi-cloud pricing/metadata). It's a hands-on senior role with strong architectural influence.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Design, build, and own low-level systems across Fusion, Fusion Snapshots, Ignite, and Sched.
  • Write reliable, well-tested code primarily in Go and C, with Rust and JVM (Groovy/Java, Micronaut) where the codebase calls for it.
  • Work close to the OS: FUSE filesystems, Linux namespaces, CRIU checkpoint/restore, process supervision, signal handling, static musl builds.
  • Tackle multi-cloud orchestration and scheduling: provider abstractions (AWS, Azure, GCP), instance selection, autoscaling, spot-instance fault tolerance, durable async queues.
  • Drive performance engineering — chunked I/O, multi-level caching, buffer pools, bandwidth management.
  • Set technical direction and raise the standard for testing, observability, and operational excellence.
  • Mentor teammates and help onboard new engineers.

ABOUT YOU

  • Deep experience building production-grade systems software, with technical ownership at Staff level.
  • Strong in Go and comfortable in C (or C++), close to the operating system.
  • Solid Linux internals — filesystems, namespaces, processes, signals, networking — and comfortable debugging at that level.
  • Built distributed and/or cloud-native systems and understand the failure modes of running across multiple clouds.
  • Write simple, well-structured, well-tested code; optimize for clarity and debuggability.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and driving work independently.
  • We use AI every day and expect engineers to use it extensively — you don't need to be an expert, but you must be genuinely open to it.

NICE TO HAVE:

  • CRIU / checkpoint-restore / process migration.
  • FUSE or other filesystem/VFS work.
  • Rust; JVM (Groovy/Java, Micronaut).
  • Container runtimes, Docker internals, Kubernetes.
  • HPC/Batch (AWS Batch, Google Batch, Azure Batch).
  • Applied ML / data engineering (Groundswell); open-source systems contributions.

WHAT WILL YOU FIND WORKING AT SEQERA?

  • Flexible working hours.
  • International working environment with more than 25 nationalities.
  • Passionate & talented team.
  • Continuous skills development.
  • Team retreats and bonding activities.
  • A culture where your opinion is valued and your decisions have a real impact on the industry.
  • Excitement of a fast-growing startup in a constantly changing environment.

GREAT BENEFITS

  • Time off: 23 days for vacations per year, 3 days given by Seqera in December, and the national/public holidays according to your location.
