Original posting from Saronic via Ashby

Saronic Technologies is a leader in revolutionizing autonomy at sea, dedicated to developing state-of-the-art solutions that enhance maritime operations through autonomous and intelligent platforms.

JOB OVERVIEW

We are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Associate Systems Engineer to support the day-to-day operation and maintenance of our infrastructure. Working under close guidance from senior engineers, you will help keep systems running reliably and securely across both on-premise and cloud environments.

The ideal candidate has a foundational understanding of Windows and Linux systems, a strong desire to learn, and the discipline to follow established procedures carefully. You will carry out well-defined work such as patching, user provisioning, monitoring alert triage and backup verification. Along the way, you will build hands-on skills in virtualization, scripting, networking and cloud services. This role is ideal for an early-career engineer who wants to grow quickly in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform day-to-day systems administration tasks across enterprise Windows and Linux environments, on-premise and in the cloud.
  • Apply operating system and application patches following established runbooks and change management procedures.
  • Provision, modify and deprovision user accounts and access in line with internal security policies.
  • Monitor system alerts, triage issues, and escalate problems that fall outside documented procedures or your training.
  • Perform routine backup verification and support restore testing as part of disaster recovery practices.
  • Shadow senior engineers on incident response, troubleshooting and small infrastructure projects.
  • Develop simple scripts (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, Python) to automate repetitive tasks, with review from senior team members.
  • Assist with hardware installation, data center rack-and-stack, and asset tracking.
  • Document work clearly, including procedures, configurations and ticket updates, and help keep runbooks current.
  • Follow internal security policies and compliance requirements in all work.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 1–3 years of experience in systems administration, IT support, or infrastructure roles. Internships, co-ops, military experience, and home lab projects are all relevant.
  • Working knowledge of Windows Server and/or Linux (RHEL/CentOS/Ubuntu) environments.
  • Basic understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs).
  • Familiarity with at least one scripting language (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, Python).
  • Strong attention to detail, with the discipline to follow procedures and self-check work before submission.
  • Clear written communication skills, particularly for documentation.
  • Willingness to ask questions early, seek help when facing obstacles, and actively incorporate feedback.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V).
  • Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS/AWS GovCloud, Azure, or GCP.
  • Familiarity with backup and disaster recovery solutions (e.g., Veeam, Commvault, Rubrik) or enterprise storage (e.g., NetApp, Dell EMC, Ceph).
  • Industry certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, or an entry-level cloud certification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Occasional standing and walking within the office
  • Manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment
  • Visual acuity to read screens, documents, and reports
